The hotel and lodging industry is highly diverse, comprised of everything from beach resorts, ski lodges, mid-size hotels off a busy interstate, and major convention hotels.
The hotel industry is largely comprised of the following employers:
Hotel brands such as Hilton, Hyatt, InterContinental Hotel Group, Marriott, and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. Each of these brands may have multiple chains – or flags – within their portfolio. For example: Marriott’s chains include the Ritz Carlton, Sheraton, Courtyard by Marriott, Westin, and Springhill Suites just to name a few. The hotel brand may or may not operate, and be the employer of, the particular hotel in which you are applying for a job.
Hotel management companies such as Aimbridge Hospitality, Davidson Hotels & Resorts, and Crestline Hotels & Resorts. You may not recognize the name of many of these companies, but they operate and are the employer of thousands of hotels across the country – including the brand names mentioned above. Chances are you will interview with one of these companies soon, each of which may operate multiple types of hotels across the country.
Independent properties have no affiliation with a brand or a management company but operate as an independent entity. These include hotels like The Broadmoor in Colorado or the Tradewinds Island Resort in Florida. They can be big resorts or small bed and breakfast hotels.
Ownership groups own the actual real estate of the hotel building itself. You may interview for a job with a hotel ownership group, if they both own and operate the hotel site, or they may hire another entity to operate the hotel. Either way it is good to be aware of these companies during the job search process.
Due to the large variety of hotel types, a career in the industry is one of never-ending potential. You can begin your career today regardless of education or experience level and quickly find a home in hospitality. Whatever your interests, personality, background or goals, the lodging industry has a destination and a career to fit your plans.
Remember, employees in the hotel industry must have an attitude of service for the guests in which we serve. Good luck!
